Scholarship Opportunities

Nearly $60,000 in Skills Training Scholarships Available to students of the SJPI.

Since its inception in 1969, the Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology has been helping students make a difference in their futures by providing skills training to students who want to change their lives by investing in education so they can enter work with skills.

Each year, industry partners, corporate Barbados and well-minded citizens make thousands of dollars in scholarships available to deserving students of the SJPI. These scholarships allow the recipients to jump-start their future by pursuing skills training with financial peace of mind.

AffinityPlus Credit Union Limited (3)

  1. Value: $500.00
  2. Open to members of Affinity Plus Credit Union for at least 2 years prior to July 31.
  3. Applicants must be second-year or third-year students at SJPI.
  4. Must be between 17 and 20 years of age.
  5. Must be in good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 3.0.
  6. Special essay required. Topic: “The Impact of the Credit Union on Barbadians”.
  7. A copy of exam results must be submitted.

The Barbados National Oil Company Limited Scholarship (11)

  1. Value: $1000.00
  2. Sponsored by the Barbados National Oil Company Limited.
  3. Open to Barbadians or CARICOM nationals legally residing in Barbados.
  4. Applicants must be enrolled in one of the following Certificate or Diploma programmes: Electrical Installation, Electronics Servicing Technology, Mechanical Maintenance Engineering, Motor Vehicle Engineering Technology and Welding Engineering.

The COB Cares Maxine McClean Scholarship

  1. Sponsored by The City of Bridgetown (COB) Co-operative Credit Union Limited.
  2. Open to members of the C.A.R.E.S Programme for a minimum of one (1) year or 12 calendar months prior to making the application.
  3. The student must have a minimum account balance of $425.00 by the deadline date for applications.
  4. Applicants must be under 26 years of age.
  5. Applicants must be pursuing or have completed studies towards a full time Certificate, Diploma, or Advanced Diploma Programme at SJPI.
  6. A copy of the student’s examination results – the academic transcript, certificate or letter of graduation issued by the SJPI must accompany the application form.

The Derrick Garrett Memorial Scholarship

  1. Value: $500.00
  2. Sponsored by the family of Mr. Derrick Garrett (1964-2017).
  3. Open to students intending to pursue first year studies at the SJPI.
  4. Applicants are asked to submit a written or oral statement of no more than 150 words on the topic, “The Biggest Challenge Faced by Youth Today”.
  5. Applicants will be subjected to an interview.

The Dorset Hurdle Memorial Scholarship

  1. Value: $1500.00
  2. Established in honour of the late Mr. Dorset Hurdle (1961-2018), former SJPI instructor for 22 years, sports coordinator, mentor, and friend.
  3. Open to SJPI sportspersons and students pursuing the Carpentry and Joinery and the Cabinet and Furniture Making programmes.
  4. Consideration will be given to new students who participated in competitive sports in the 2 years before enrolling at SJPI.
  5. Applicants are asked to write no more than 150 words on the topic, “The Valuable Lessons Sports has Taught Me” OR “What technical-vocational education means to me”.

HIPAC LIMITED Scholarship in Agriculture (1)

  3. Open to Barbadian students pursuing the full-time Certificate or Diploma in Agriculture.
  4. Applicants should be under the age of 30 years.
  5. An interview is used to assist in the selection process.

The Kregg Nurse Memorial Scholarship

  1. Sponsored by The Caribbean Catalyst Inc.
  2. Awarded to an individual with a physical disability who has successfully completed at least one year of post-secondary school education, in any field, and who is continuing formal education at a recognised tertiary educational institution.

The Annual Markonia Award (2)

  1. Value: $900.00
  2. Sponsored by Mark and Sonia Corbin, former students, and employees of SJPI.
  3. Open to past students of Princess Margaret Secondary or Springer Memorial School pursuing first year full-time studies at the SJPI.
  4. Applicants must be between the ages of sixteen (16) and eighteen (18) years old and citizens of Barbados.
  5. Applicants must provide a letter of recommendation from their secondary school Principal, Year Head, Certified Coach or Form Teacher. These must be submitted to the Guidance Officer at shawna.carter@sjpi.edu.bb

National Ozone Depleting Substances Phase-Out Support Scholarship (3)

  1. Value: $1100.00
  2. Sponsored by the Ministry of Environment and National Beautification’s National Ozone Unit.
  3. Awarded to Barbadian second-year students in the Diploma in Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning who have attained a GPA of 3.0 in their first year.
  4. Must have excellent attendance (over 80% overall), exemplary conduct, character and deportment.
  5. Applicants will be subject to an interview.

The Patrick Rowe Memorial Scholarship

  1. Sponsored by the Board of Management – SJPI.
  2. Open to students intending to pursue first year full-time studies at the SJPI or students entering the second year of full-time studies with a GPA of 3.0 or above.
  3. Evidence of financial need must be demonstrated.
  4. Written statement of no more than 150 words entitled, “What technical-vocational education means to me” should accompany the application.

The Timothy Gittens Memorial Scholarship (5)

  3. Applicants must be citizens of Barbados.
  4. Open to full-time students at SJPI who demonstrate leadership qualities on campus and/or in their community.
  5. Applicants must submit a written statement of no more than 150 words on the topic “The Benefits of an SJPI Education to me”.

The Verta Coppin Memorial Scholarship (4)

  1. Sponsored by the Barbados Public Workers’ Co-operative Credit Union Limited (BPWCCUL).
  2. Open to students of SJPI who are members of BPWCCUL for at least one year. Members must have a minimum balance of $200 on account.
  3. Must submit a completed Application Form, along with a written statement (no more than 150 words) stating why the scholarship should be awarded and showing evidence of financial need, a character reference letter and evidence of satisfactory academic performance (for continuing students).
